CubeQuiz
CubeQuiz is a quizzing tool which uses visual markers to collect answers. It does not require phones or laptops and just one webcam or a phone.
Why CubeQuiz?
CubeQuiz was originally designed for primary schools, as a healthier and more collaborative alternative to phones, tablets, and laptops. These devices often distract from the quiz experience and shift the focus to screens instead of the people in the room. CubeQuiz brings attention back to what matters: the quiz, the shared experience, and the teamwork.
While integrating CubeQuiz into education systems poses practical challenges, I found that the concept works just as well (or even better 😇) in adult contexts—like pub quizzes, community events, team-building sessions, or employee training.
Here’s why CubeQuiz might be a great fit for your setting:
🤝 More human, less screen
Whether you're in a classroom, bar, or boardroom, focusing on each other—not a screen—boosts engagement, collaboration, and fun.

📵 No personal devices needed
Participants don’t need to use their own phones. This avoids common issues like:
- People being reluctant to share their phone with teammates
- Phones dying, disconnecting, or leaving with participants
- Inconsistent user experiences due to device variability
Especially in professional or commercial settings, delivering a consistent, self-contained experience is key.
📶 Works without internet or network
Unlike most quiz apps, CubeQuiz doesn’t rely on mobile data, Wi-Fi, or local networks on the CubeQuiz device or the participants' phones. Everything runs offline:
- No worries about signal drops or network setup
- The CubeQuiz site can be installed as a web app and run entirely offline
- Just plug in your webcam and start playing
😎 And honestly…
It’s just more fun!!!
How it works
A quiz can have multiple formats, ranging from multiple choice (ABCD) questions to number guessers to item sorters. Participants answer by rotating or moving the CubeQuiz cube. For example, for the multiple choice question, players rotate the cube so it shows their answer of A, B, C or D to the camera. The camera reads their response instantly.
